Mosquito Bites:

  • Only female mosquitoes bite to obtain a blood meal necessary for egg production. Males do not bite.
  • Human reactions to bites vary, ranging from mild to severe.

Bite Mechanism:

  • Mosquitoes use their proboscis to pierce skin and suck blood, injecting saliva that causes itching and bumps.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Initial reactions include red, itchy bumps appearing shortly after the bite.
  • More severe reactions might include blisters or bruise-like spots.
  • Severe symptoms can manifest in children, individuals new to a particular mosquito species, or those with weakened immune systems.
  • These include large swelling areas, fever, hives, and swollen lymph nodes.

Complications:

  • Scratching can lead to infections, indicated by redness, warmth, or red streaks. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
  • Mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue, Zika virus, and malaria, a parasitic disease.
  • A mosquito gets infected with a germ when it bites a person or animal that is infected.

Prevention:

  • Hire a licensed, insured professional who uses EPA-registered repellents!
  • Wear protective clothing!
  • Use repellent-treated gear, and manage mosquito populations both indoors and outdoors, especially when traveling.

Treatment:

  •  Basic care involves cleaning the bite, applying ice to reduce swelling and itching, and using baking soda paste for relief. Over-the-counter creams can also mitigate itching.
